If you don't see the desktop icon, make sure you installed the files on the same drive as Silverlight. I had Silverlight in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Silverlight and the application in D:\MySemanticSearch. Uninstalling the app and moving the files to C:\MySemanticSearch and reinstalling worked perfectly. I also found that the install fails if there is a space in the file path for MySemanticSearch.

I'm seeing the same issue. I'm only testing this on a VM, but there is a testpage in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\MySemanticSearch\MySemanticSearch that seems to be the main content page.

Setup completes without any errors that I can see, but no icon was placed on the desktop. What can I do next to troubleshoot this?

Solution Architecture < Previous Next > Using My Semantic Search

To install the latest version of My Semantic Search, execute the following procedure.

Click the Downloads tab, and then click the latest version executable to download it.
Accept the online licensing agreement.
Once downloaded, execute the self-extracting archive.
Accept the installation licensing agreement.
Choose a target directory on your computer or accept the one provided by default, and click Extract.
Open Windows PowerShell command prompt with elevated privileges.
Execute the following command: Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted.
Close the Windows PowerShell command prompt.
Run C:\MySemanticSearch\Setup.cmd with elevated privileges.

My Semantic Search integrates several technologies in order to show new SQL Server 2012 features. It relies heavily on WCF RIA Services hosted on IIS, and provides an interface using a Silverlight Out-Of-Browser interface. A user can connect from this interface to any SQL Server 2012 instance, review existing FileTables that may have been created, add or delete existing files, create new FileTables, or even new databases for those FileTables.

Note: In order to have access to a SQL Server 2012 instance using My Semantic Search, the user running the Silverlight application has to be a SQL Server Administrator at that instance.

Searching for related documents < Previous

The Tag Cloud section at the right of the application’s window can be used to filter the Documents list, and it can show tags for three specific situations:

No documents are selected: shows tags for the entire FileTable.
1 document is selected: shows tags for that document.
Multiple documents are selected: shows tags with average score for the set of documents selected.

If you hover the mouse over a tag, you can see a score for that tag on each situation. Clicking a tag updates the Documents list to show only the documents related to that tag. Also, you can see how relevant that tag is for each document at the right of the Documents list.

If you want, you can click the Tab Grid tab to show the tags as a list instead. Clicking a tag also filters the Documents list in this view the same way the tag cloud does.

You can also narrow the number of tags that are shown, using the Top Results slider. Only the most relevant tags will be included.

My Semantic Search provides a section that shows related documents for any selected document. It also sorts them by their relevance to the selected document.

Showing a list of related documents

Select any document in the Documents list.
Drag the Related Documents slide bar at the bottom of the Documents list to reveal the list.
Click any other document in the Documents list to update the Related Documents list automatically.

You can also update the Documents list using the Related Documents list, to find a selected related document in the upper list. Check the following procedure for this feature.

Note: For this feature to work properly, the Documents list must be listing the document you want to find at the time. Otherwise, it won’t be found.

Updating the Documents list with a Related Document

Click any file in the Related Documents list.
Click Find in upper list.
Check that the selected document in the Documents list is now the one that was selected previously in the Related Documents list.

Retrieving file information < Previous Next > Searching for related documents

You can filter the document list using one of the three available options:

Full text search: Searches for an exact string in all the documents.
Filter by tag: Show only the documents that contain the selected tags.
Filter Document Property: Filters documents using Office Open XML document properties.

You can also combine them in any way. We’ll separately explain each of them here.

Filtering documents using Full text search

In the Full text search textbox, write a query term, such as “SQL Server”, without quotation marks.
Click Search.
Check that the Documents list now shows only those documents that contain the query term.

Filtering documents using Filter by Tag

Click the Filter by Tag list and expand it.
Check one of the tags from the list using the checkbox on the left of that tag.
Click Search.
Check that the Document list now has been narrowed to show only those documents related to the selected tag.

Note: If you select more than one tag, only the first one will be shown when the Filter by Tag list is closed

Filtering documents using Filter Document Property

Click the Filter Document Property list and expand it.
Select Title.
Write the title of one of the documents, such as “Inside SQL Azure”, using quotation marks.

Note: This is the title that you can see when you check the properties of one of the Word files.
Click Search.
Check that the document with that title is listed.

You can use any of the other listed document properties, such as PageCount or Authors.

Adding new files to a FileTable < Previous Next > Retrieving file information

Using My Semantic Search, you can either delete or download any file from any FileTable. You just need to follow these steps.

Note: Be careful if you choose to delete a file. No undo operation is supported.

Click one of the files in the Documents list to select it.
Click Delete if you want to remove it from the FileTable, or click Download if you want to save that file to a different location.
