I'm not convinced that everything I listed on "Windows Features" is absolutely necessary -- but anyone can test whether individual elements would be needed for this project.

Hello -- this technology is built on SQL Server 2012 Semantic Search. You should be able to use the demo T-SQL scripts to completely obtain all scores directly from SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio).

I focused on this MySemanticSearch sample and the first task was getting it working with Windows 8. Not being experienced in the technologies that it works with, I am posting to provide guidance with how to make this project work with Windows 8. These insights might also help you with other operating systems.

This thread does NOT have all the prerequistes covered (see other threads in this discussion). The focus of this post is the unique installation nuances for Windows 8 (based on the MySemanticSearch build as of August 5, 2012).

This project requires .NET 4.0, which already comes with Windows 8. However, the version in Windows 8 includes (by default) .NET 4.5. The script which sets up this project will not work correctly, since it looks for a .NET 4 entry in the installed Windows program (but there is no such listing in Windows 8). I simply commented that line out using the PowerShell IDE. The file is called "CheckNet4" and is in the "Check" subdirectory.

Put a pound sign (PowerShell line comment) before:

SearchUninstall -SearchFor 'Microsoft .NET Framework 4*';

Next, you will need to configure Windows to have the important parts for IIS and the WCF RIA Service (which is the bridge from Silverlight to SQL Server). In the case of Windows 8, the already-installed Silverlight version is 5, and OK for this application. The WCF RIA Service is how this application connects with SQL Server. If you have been having problems connecting, you may be having problems with the configuration of the WCF RIA Service (a topic beyond scope of this post, but search Bing for solultions -- there is, for example, an aspnet_regiis.exe which you may need to run on operating systems OTHER than Windows 8).

It turns out that many developers have strong opinions on the future of WCF RIA Service independent of Silverlight -- search the MSDN forums for what the latest is on these emerging technologies, and make the best decision for your use of these technologies.

Here are some pictures for how to install ("Turn Windows Features On or Off"):

Again, Windows 8 is running on .NET 4.5, so there is no need to activate the .NET 3.5 (which exists for older legacy web applications).

Finally, I had to change the default setting for the web application inside Internet Information Services. The default is "ASP .NET" which does not appear as a possible choice (and IIS tells you so at one point). My solution was to change it to the "DefaultAppPool".

This guidance is based on the Windows 8 Preview, and may not represent the exact situation for Windows 8 RTM (or future versions). However, I believe focusing the discussion on the .NET version and the WCF RIA Service will help anyone debug possible connection issues in future OS deployments.

Anyone knows how the score of each tag is calculated in this application.

I tried this: generated a document with only two words, the score for each word is not 0.5.

And these two scores are not equal to each other. They are 0.22.. and 0.20...

Please clarify this if anyone knows the background equations or whatever for this score generation.

Hi Stuart,

Please check you have all the prerequisites for using MSS. You can check them here. Specifically, have you installed the Semantic Language Statistics DB?

I modified a script from a previous discussion to tailor it to your specific table/database. Please, try deleting the FileTable from the database and creating it again using this script, so we can pinpoint if there's any error there. If it works without any errors, try MSS again.

Install was fine and everything appears to be working as expected, except from tags. When I click on a document I get the following error:

Error retrieving document tags.
Database: Demo
FileTable: DemoFileTable
Document List: '5c7054cb-48b9-e111-a488-f0bf97169164'

Not sure if it's something I've missed on my part so will continue investigating. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I am getting an error on the 'Configure SQL Server Instance' input form to specify which SQL Server to connect to.

The full error message is:

Invoke operation 'CheckServerConnection' failed. [HttpWebRequest_WebException_RemoteServer]
Arguments: NotFound
Debugging resource strings are unavailable. Often the key and arguments provide sufficient information to diagnose the problem. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=106663&Version=5.1.10411.0&File=System.Windows.dll&Key=HttpWebRequest_WebException_RemoteServer

SQL Server is running on the same box as I am running the application from. Using the instance name or 'localhost' results in the same message.

All pre-requisites are present and I have re-installed a couple of times with no apparent problem. I have ran the PowerShell script in the install steps. Have added and readded the IIS roles as per other the discussion suggestions.

I can connect fine to the SQL instance via Management Studio so that would not be the issue.

Any idea on what the next step should be?

Created Issue: First "Error Retrieving List of Databases" Then "Error Creating Database" [618]

I've tried reinstalling Silverlight, SQL Server, VisualStudio, RIAService, and still getting the "Error Retrieving List of Databases" messages everytime I launch the App. I'm running Windows Server 2k8R2, from a laptop, fully updated, and patched. VisualStudio 2010 and 2011 Beta, Silverlight 4 and 5, including SDK's.

I originally was adding Office documents to the FileTable. I created a simple text file and added that to the FileTable. Tags were discovered in the text file. I assumed this is a problem with the Office Filter Pack. On this VM that I am using for the My Semantic Search application I had SharePoint pre-installed which installed the Office Filter Pack as a prerequisite. I have tried to repair the Filter Pack but it does not change the behavior. I uninstalled and re-installed the Filter Pack but it did not change the behavior. I also installed the iFilter for pdf's which didn't change the behavior.

Finally I found this article:

Once I ran the following command and restarted SQL the office files started to receive tags.

I have installed the My Semantic Search without error. I used the application to create a database and table for me. I added documents through the application and they appear in the Documents window. I do no see any tags being discovered. I am not sure what I may have missed.
